A competent attorney, but communication could be more consistent

I hired Maria Montoya Chavez to assist with a complex post-divorce modification involving child custody and support. Her deep experience, particularly her recognition in family law mediation by Best Lawyers, was evident. She understood the nuances of New Mexico family law and her 25 years of practice provided a solid foundation. The initial strategy she developed was sound. However, the experience fell short in execution. Response times to emails were often slower than expected, sometimes taking several business days, which added to my anxiety during a stressful process. While her legal advice was technically correct, explanations sometimes felt rushed, leaving me with unanswered questions about the 'why' behind certain steps. The outcome of my case was ultimately fair, which speaks to her competence. For straightforward matters, she is undoubtedly knowledgeable, but if you require frequent updates and detailed guidance, you may need to be very proactive in seeking it. Her expertise is real, but the client service aspect felt just adequate.
