Competent handling of a workplace dispute, but communication could improve

I hired John Keeney at CDF Labor Law to advise my small business on a wrongful termination claim brought by a former employee. As a relatively new attorney, his foundational knowledge of labor and employment law for management was evident, and he clearly understood the legal principles involved. His background from UC Irvine and the firm's reputation in Los Angeles were reassuring factors. He successfully drafted a strong response to the initial claim, and the matter was resolved without litigation, which was our primary goal. However, the experience felt somewhat transactional. While John is undoubtedly sharp and his recognition in areas like Commercial Litigation and Labor and Employment Law - Management suggests a promising trajectory, I sometimes felt like just another file. Response times to emails were occasionally slower than I'd have preferred, especially during non-critical phases, and I had to follow up more than once for updates. His explanations of legal strategy were clear when we spoke, but I would have appreciated more proactive communication setting expectations on timelines. For straightforward employment matters, he is a competent and cost-effective option, but you may need to manage the communication flow yourself.
