Competent on cross-border fund formation, but communication was inconsistent

I engaged Mr. Machida of Atsumi & Sakai to assist my Atlanta-based startup with structuring a small venture capital fund that would have investors in both the US and Japan. His recognition in The Best Lawyers in Japan for Private Equity and Venture Capital Law was a key factor in our selection, and his educational background, blending a USC LL.M. with his foundational Japanese legal training, seemed perfectly suited for our needs. On the substantive legal work for the fund formation documents, he was undoubtedly knowledgeable. He efficiently navigated the complexities of aligning Japanese and US expectations. However, the experience was mixed. While his analysis was sharp, his responsiveness was inconsistent, with emails sometimes taking several days for a reply, which created anxiety during time-sensitive negotiations. Furthermore, while his expertise in private funds is clear, his general practice approach sometimes felt less specialized than we anticipated for the premium rate. For straightforward, non-urgent cross-border fund matters, his competence is solid. Just be prepared to manage communication expectations proactively and understand that his broad practice might mean you're not getting a specialist's undivided attention.
