Competent in complex matters, but communication could improve

I engaged Tobias Meyer-Hotting and his team at McDermott Will & Schulte in Nashville to assist with a cross-border contractual dispute that had arbitration clauses pointing to ICC rules. Given his recognition in International Arbitration and his background practicing in Düsseldorf, he was well-equipped for the European aspects of our case. His analysis of the procedural rules and strategic positioning was undeniably sharp and reflected the expertise you'd expect from an attorney with his accolades. However, my experience was mixed. While the substantive legal work was solid, practical execution had shortcomings. Communication was sometimes delayed, with responses taking several days during critical phases, which created anxiety. There were also instances where fee estimates for certain discovery steps were exceeded without a clear, timely explanation. For a straightforward matter, he might be over-qualified, but for our complex litigation with international elements, his competence was evident. Ultimately, we achieved an acceptable settlement, but the process felt more cumbersome than anticipated. He is clearly knowledgeable, but client management and setting realistic expectations about timelines and costs could be more consistent.
