Competent in complex litigation, but communication could improve

I engaged Timothy Farrell of Ropes & Gray to handle a breach of contract and business tort dispute for my mid-sized distribution company. His recognition in commercial litigation by Best Lawyers was a primary factor in our selection, and his deep knowledge of the procedural intricacies in Illinois courts was evident throughout. When faced with aggressive discovery tactics from the opposing counsel, his strategic response was precisely calibrated and effective. However, the experience fell short of our expectations in a few key areas. While the substantive legal work was solid, communication often felt transactional. Updates were sometimes delayed, requiring follow-up from our team, and responses to non-urgent emails could take several business days. The firm's billing structure, while standard for a firm of this caliber, felt rigid for the level of ongoing client liaison we anticipated. Our matter was resolved favorably, largely due to Mr. Farrell's litigation acumen, but the process felt more distant and less collaborative than we had hoped. He is undoubtedly a skilled attorney in the commercial litigation space, but client management aspects could be more consistent.
