Experienced and knowledgeable, but communication could improve

I engaged Sharon Smith at Armbrust & Brown to assist with a complex land use issue for a small commercial property I own on the outskirts of Austin. The situation involved navigating municipal zoning ordinances that intersected with some environmental considerations regarding an old septic system. With over four decades of experience and her recognition in areas like Municipal and Environmental Law, I was confident in her technical expertise, and that proved true. Her analysis of the city's regulatory framework was thorough, and she successfully guided the variance application through the necessary channels. However, the experience felt somewhat transactional. While she is undoubtedly a top attorney in her field, as her Best Lawyers recognition suggests, there were periods of several days where I received no updates unless I initiated contact. Response times to emails were slower than I anticipated. For straightforward legal matters, her deep knowledge of Texas law, honed since her graduation from Texas Tech in '84, is a significant asset. My case was resolved satisfactorily, but the process required more proactive follow-up on my part than I expected. She is competent and gets results, but client communication and setting clear expectations on timelines could be enhanced.
