Competent on complex matters, but communication was inconsistent

I engaged Sebastian Burgis and his team at Skadden for guidance on a cross-border capital markets transaction involving a German special purpose acquisition vehicle (SPAC) and a U.S.-based target company. There is no question about his technical expertise; his recognition in Capital Markets Law and his deep experience in the Frankfurt market were evident in the structuring advice he provided. The documents were meticulously drafted to navigate both EU and SEC regulations. However, for a matter of this complexity and the associated premium, I expected more consistent and proactive communication. There were periods where responses to emails took several days, and updates on filing timelines often had to be prompted by me. While the final legal work product was solid and the transaction closed successfully, the client service experience felt somewhat transactional. For straightforward execution, he is certainly capable, but for clients who prioritize regular, strategic partnership and clear expectation-setting throughout the process, there may be room for improvement. His competence is undeniable, but the overall service delivery was just adequate.
