Competent on complex finance, but communication could improve

I engaged Mr. Nozaki of Atsumi & Sakai for guidance on a cross-border structured finance transaction involving assets in both the US and Japan. His technical expertise was evident; his background with an LL.M. in Banking and Financial Law from Boston University and his recognition in Structured Finance Law by Best Lawyers were clear assets. He provided a solid analysis of the regulatory complexities, particularly on the Japanese side, which was invaluable. However, the experience was not without its frustrations. While his legal advice was sound, communication was sometimes delayed, with responses taking longer than expected given the urgency of our deal timeline. There were also moments where his explanations, though thorough, felt more geared towards a peer than a client, requiring me to seek additional clarification. For straightforward, highly complex matters where time is less critical, his deep knowledge in structured finance is a definite benefit. For my situation, which required more frequent touchpoints, the execution fell a bit short of the high expectations set by his impressive credentials.
