Competent and experienced, but communication could be improved

I engaged Mr. Winsor and Blaney McMurtry LLP for a complex commercial dispute involving a supplier contract. His background, particularly the recognition in Corporate and Commercial Litigation noted in his profile, gave me confidence. His deep experience, referencing his work on the Ocean Ranger case and his long career since graduating Osgoode Hall in 1973, was evident in his strategic approach to our matter. He understood the nuances of the situation and provided sound legal advice that ultimately helped us reach a settlement. However, my experience was a mixed bag. While his legal acumen was solid, the practical aspects of client service were merely adequate. Response times to emails were often slower than I would have liked, sometimes taking several days. Updates were infrequent unless I initiated contact, which left me feeling somewhat in the dark during slower periods of the case. For straightforward legal needs, his expertise is undeniable, but if you require consistent, proactive communication, you may need to set very clear expectations from the outset. He knows the law thoroughly, but the client management side felt like it was operating on a different, less responsive timeline.
