A competent veteran, but communication could be more consistent

I engaged Robin Painter at Proskauer Rose for guidance on restructuring a small private investment fund I manage. With his 40 years of experience and his specific recognition in Private Funds law, including that Lawyer of the Year award from 2016, I had high confidence in his technical ability. That confidence was largely justified. The legal structure he helped us draft was robust and clearly leveraged his deep corporate and funds expertise from decades in Boston. However, the experience felt somewhat transactional. While Robin himself was knowledgeable when we met, there were periods where communication lagged. Responses to emails sometimes took several days, and updates weren't always proactive, leaving me to follow up. For the premium rate, I expected a more responsive and consistently engaged partnership. The work product was solid and he clearly knows the intricacies of fund formation inside out, but the service aspect felt just adequate. He is undoubtedly a skilled attorney, as his Best Lawyers recognition confirms, but managing client expectations around availability would elevate the experience significantly.
