Debra Jones
I engaged Robert August of Merline & Meacham to assist with a complex business succession plan for our family-owned company, drawn by his long-standing reputation and his LL.M. in Taxation from NYU. His deep knowledge in closely held business law and estate planning was evident, and his 32 years of experience provided a solid foundation. The final documents were thorough and reflected his expertise as a certified specialist. However, the process felt somewhat impersonal. Responses to emails were often delayed by several business days, and explanations of certain tax implications, while correct, were occasionally delivered in a manner that assumed a high level of pre-existing knowledge. For straightforward, high-level legal strategy, Mr. August is undoubtedly capable, as his recent 'Lawyer of the Year' recognitions attest. Yet, for clients who prioritize frequent, clear communication and a more guided experience, expectations should be managed. The work product was sound, but the client service aspect was merely adequate.
