Dick’s litigation and appellate practice focuses primarily on business and commercial disputes, employment law, education law, and civil rights cases that are typically resolved in federal court. He frequently appears in the U.S. District Courts for the Districts of Maine and New Hampshire and in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. Dick devotes a significant portion of his practice to the representation of individuals with disabilities and their families, often in cases arising under special education or anti-discrimination laws. In addition, Dick has experience litigating a range of civil rights and constitutional claims, having served for nearly 3 decades as the chair of the Legal Panel for the American Civil Liberties Union of Maine. For over twenty years, Dick has devoted much of his free time to helping students learn about the law as a lawyer coach for the Maine High School Mock Trial program. He currently coaches the eight-time state championship mock trial team from Cape Elizabeth High School.

Our company retained Dick O'Meara after a former executive filed a lawsuit alleging wrongful termination and intellectual property theft, a complex case that threatened our operations. From our first meeting, his deep experience was evident. He didn't just grasp the intricate details of the employment and IP issues; he framed them within a strategic narrative for federal court, where he clearly has decades of comfort. His recognition as a Lawyer of the Year in both Litigation and Copyright Law is well-earned—his briefs were masterful, and his command of appellate procedure gave us immense confidence during settlement negotiations. Dick is a true counselor; his advice was pragmatic, cutting through the noise to focus on protecting our business. The outcome was excellent, far exceeding our initial hopes. If there's any minor critique, it's that his billing structure, while fair for his caliber, could be communicated with a bit more granularity upfront. For high-stakes commercial disputes, Dick O'Meara is an exceptional choice.
