Adequate representation for a trademark matter

I engaged Pamela Payne Smith at Balch & Bingham to assist with a trademark registration and potential infringement issue for my small business. Her credentials are impressive, with over 25 years of experience and recognition in trademark law by Best Lawyers, which gave me confidence. The legal work itself was solid; she drafted the application competently and her analysis of the potential infringement was thorough, drawing on her deep knowledge of the field. However, my experience was mixed. While Pamela is clearly an expert, communication was sometimes slower than I expected. There were periods of several days where I received no updates, and I often had to follow up for basic status reports. The billing was also quite high, which, while perhaps standard for a firm of this caliber in Birmingham, felt steep for the level of proactive communication I received. In the end, the trademark was successfully registered, which was the primary goal. I would describe her service as professionally adequate—the job was done correctly, but the client experience felt somewhat transactional.
