A solid, experienced attorney for complex estate planning

I engaged Neal Nusholtz at Kemp Klein to assist with a complex estate and business succession plan for our family-owned manufacturing company in Troy. With his 46 years of experience and recognition in trusts, estates, and tax law, I had high confidence in his technical ability. He certainly knows the intricacies of estate and gift taxation and business tax planning inside and out. The final documents, integrating our corporate structure with a series of trusts, were meticulously drafted and reflected his deep expertise. However, the experience felt somewhat transactional. While Neal is clearly a master of his craft, communication was not always fluid. Responses to emails could take several days, and at times, explanations of dense tax implications were delivered in a very matter-of-fact manner that assumed a level of familiarity I didn't possess. For the sheer complexity of the work, his fee was justified, but I did expect a more collaborative and responsive process given his stature. He successfully navigated the legal and tax hurdles, which was the primary goal, but the client service aspect was merely adequate. If you need a highly competent technician for sophisticated planning in Michigan, he is a valid choice, but be prepared to manage the communication flow proactively.
