Competent on the corporate deal, but communication was inconsistent

I engaged Morris Szwimer at Spiegel Ryan to assist with the acquisition of a small tech startup my company was pursuing. His background in Corporate Law and M&A, including his recognition by Best Lawyers, gave me confidence in his technical ability. Indeed, the structuring of the deal and the due diligence process were handled thoroughly. His experience, particularly with the cross-border nuances given his practice in Montréal, was evident when navigating some Canadian IP considerations. However, my experience was mixed. While the legal work was solid, communication was a notable challenge. There were periods of several days where updates were scarce, and responses to emails were sometimes delayed, leaving me to follow up. The billing was as expected for San Francisco, but the value felt just adequate given the communication gaps. He is clearly knowledgeable and got the transaction closed, but the process felt more transactional than collaborative. I would describe him as a capable attorney who delivered on the core legal work, though the client service aspect could be more consistent.
