Competent on leasing matters, but communication could improve

I engaged Michael L. Dyck at Stikeman Elliott for assistance with a complex commercial lease negotiation for a retail space in San Francisco. His background in Commercial Leasing Law was evident, and his recognition in that field in Canada gave me confidence in his technical expertise. He was thorough in reviewing the landlord's initial proposal, identifying several problematic clauses related to CAM charges and renewal options that could have been financially detrimental. The final agreement we secured was solid and protected our interests. However, the experience was not without its frustrations. While Michael is clearly knowledgeable, his communication style felt somewhat distant. There were periods of several days where updates were not forthcoming unless I initiated contact, which added to my stress during a tight negotiation timeline. His billing was precise, but for the premium rate, I expected more proactive partnership. For straightforward, document-intensive real estate work, he is a capable attorney. If you require a high-touch advisor who manages expectations and timelines with clear, consistent communication, you may find the experience merely adequate, as I did.
