A competent, experienced attorney with some practical drawbacks

I engaged Michael Mooney of Nutter McClennen & Fish to assist with a complex estate planning matter that involved significant tax implications for my family business. With his nearly four decades of experience and recognition in tax law, I was confident in his technical ability, and that confidence was largely justified. His analysis of the intergenerational transfer and the potential tax exposure was thorough and demonstrated the deep knowledge one would expect from a Boston College Law School graduate of his tenure. The documents he drafted were precise and left no stone unturned. However, my experience was a mixed bag. While the final work product was solid, the process felt somewhat impersonal. Communication was not as proactive as I had hoped; updates were often prompted by my inquiries, and there were noticeable delays in receiving callbacks. His senior status at the firm seemed to correlate with a very packed schedule, which impacted responsiveness. For straightforward, high-stakes legal drafting, Mr. Mooney is undoubtedly capable. Yet, for clients who prioritize consistent communication and a more guided, hand-holding approach through a lengthy legal process, expectations may need to be managed. You are getting a veteran lawyer's expertise, but not necessarily a tailored client service experience.
