Competent on zoning issues, but communication could improve

I hired Michael Coppa from Norris McLaughlin to assist with a complex zoning variance for a small commercial property I was purchasing in Brooklyn. His background in Land Use and Zoning Law, which I saw he was recognized for, was evident. He understood the local regulations thoroughly and his advice on navigating the Board of Standards and Appeals was sound. The application was ultimately successful, which was the primary goal. However, the experience had some notable frustrations. While Michael is clearly knowledgeable, especially for an attorney with his level of experience, there were often significant delays in receiving responses to emails. Updates were not proactive, leaving me to frequently follow up. The billing was clear, but at times I felt the pace of work didn't match the urgency of our timeline with the seller. For straightforward legal matters within his recognized practice areas like real estate, he is certainly capable. Yet, managing client expectations and maintaining consistent communication seem to be areas for growth. He got the job done competently, but the process felt more reactive than collaborative.
