Competent in complex zoning, but communication could improve

I engaged Matthew Snell at Nutter McClennen & Fish to assist with a complex commercial property acquisition in Boston that involved significant zoning variances and an environmental review. His deep knowledge of land use law and the local regulatory landscape was immediately apparent, and his 20 years of experience in real estate and environmental matters provided a solid foundation for our case. The work product was technically sound and he successfully navigated the approval process. However, for a matter of this scale and given his recognized expertise, I expected more proactive communication. There were periods where updates were sparse unless I initiated contact, and response times to emails were sometimes slower than anticipated. While I have no doubt about his legal acumen—his recognition by Best Lawyers is well-earned—the client service aspect felt merely adequate. For straightforward legal tasks, he is a capable choice, but for clients who prioritize consistent dialogue, setting clear expectations at the outset is advisable.
