Competent handling of a cross-border estate matter

I engaged Matthew Bilmes at De Grandpré Chait to assist with the administration of my father's estate, which involved assets in both Florida and Canada. Matthew's background, including his McGill law degree and recognition in Trusts and Estates by Best Lawyers in Canada, gave me confidence in his technical ability. His near-decade of experience was evident in the way he navigated the complexities of the cross-border tax implications and the trust structures involved. The work product was solid, and he clearly understood the legal nuances. However, my experience was marked by adequate, not exceptional, service. Communication was sometimes slower than I would have preferred, with responses taking several business days during critical phases. While his advice was sound when received, I occasionally felt I had to follow up to move things forward. The billing was as expected, but the process lacked the proactive touch I had hoped for given the sensitive nature of the matter. For straightforward legal expertise in trusts and estates, particularly with a Canadian connection, Matthew is a capable attorney. Just be prepared to manage your own expectations regarding client communication and timeline management.
