Competent on corporate matters, but communication could improve

I engaged Matthew Swartz at Pillsbury for guidance on a mid-sized business acquisition. His background in Mergers and Acquisitions Law, and the recognition from Best Lawyers in that area, were the primary reasons for my selection. On the substantive legal work—diligence review and structuring the asset purchase agreement—he was undoubtedly competent. His experience in Corporate Law was evident in his thorough approach to the documentation. However, the process felt somewhat transactional. While I never doubted his expertise in securities and capital markets considerations, there were periods of significant delay in receiving responses to my emails, which added to my stress as a client. My expectations for proactive updates were not fully met. For straightforward corporate legal tasks, he gets the job done reliably, but for clients who prioritize consistent, clear communication and a more hands-on advisory relationship, there may be a gap between expectation and experience.
