Competent on ERISA matter, but communication could improve

I engaged Marissa Sims at Winston & Strawn to assist with a complex employee benefits issue related to a company merger. Her background in ERISA law and her recognition in that field were the primary reasons for my selection. On the substantive legal work, she was undeniably proficient. She navigated the intricate compliance requirements stemming from the merger of our two benefit plans with clear expertise, and the final documents were meticulously prepared. However, the experience fell short of exceptional in a few operational areas. Response times were sometimes longer than anticipated, requiring follow-up emails to get status updates on draft reviews. While her advice was sound when received, there were moments where I felt a more proactive communication style regarding potential roadblocks would have been beneficial. For a straightforward matter, her competence is evident, and her nine years of experience at a top firm like Winston & Strawn show. Yet, for clients who prioritize consistent, anticipatory communication as part of the service, there is room for refinement. She successfully resolved our issue, but the process felt more transactional than collaborative at times.
