Competent in real estate matters, but communication could improve

I engaged Malek Khawam at Hahn Loeser to assist with a zoning variance for a small commercial property acquisition in Cleveland. His background in real estate and land use was evident; he navigated the city's specific urban management requirements with a solid understanding, which I appreciated given his MPA focus. The documentation for the variance application was thorough, and his recognition in areas like construction law seemed well-founded based on his grasp of the technicalities. However, the experience felt transactional. There were periods of several days where I received no updates unless I initiated contact, and explanations of certain fee structures related to the title review felt rushed. While he successfully secured the variance, the process lacked the proactive communication I expected. For straightforward real estate or corporate matters where you need capable legal work, Malek is a competent choice, but be prepared to manage the timeline and information flow yourself.
