Competent on complex zoning but communication could improve

I engaged Lauren Traina at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher to assist with a complex land use entitlement for a mixed-use development project in San Diego. Her recognition in Land Use and Zoning Law by Best Lawyers was a primary factor in our selection, and her technical knowledge in this area is evident. She was adept at navigating the specific municipal codes and the environmental review process, which was crucial for our project's approval. However, the experience was a mixed bag. While the legal work product was solid, we often experienced significant delays in receiving responses to emails and calls, which created some anxiety during tight municipal deadlines. For a firm of this caliber, I expected more proactive updates. Her three years of experience showed in her sharp analysis, but the client service aspect felt more like that of a junior associate still finding their rhythm. She successfully guided the project through a key hearing, but managing expectations and communication throughout could have been smoother. She is clearly knowledgeable, especially given her USC Gould School of Law background and recognition in real estate and energy law, but the overall service delivery was merely adequate for the premium rate.
