Adequate guidance on a complex executive compensation matter

I engaged Laura Robinson at Bradley Arant to assist with structuring an executive compensation package for a key hire at my Birmingham-based company. Her deep expertise in ERISA and executive compensation, backed by her decades of experience and recognition in the field, was immediately apparent. She provided a technically sound analysis of the non-qualified deferred compensation plan we were considering, ensuring compliance with Section 409A. However, the experience felt somewhat transactional. While her legal advice was competent, communication was not as proactive as I had hoped; responses to emails sometimes took several business days, and explanations, while accurate, could be quite dense for a non-specialist. The billing reflected the firm's premium stature, which I expected, but the value felt aligned more with the document review than with strategic partnership. For a straightforward, complex legal question, she is a capable attorney. For clients seeking frequent touchpoints and more tailored, business-oriented counsel throughout a process, expectations should be managed. Her knowledge of the law is not in question, but the service experience was merely satisfactory.
