Competent corporate counsel, but communication could improve

I engaged Kimberly Baber at Varnum to assist with a mid-sized business acquisition in the Grand Rapids area. Her deep experience, particularly her 28-year tenure and recognition in Mergers and Acquisitions Law by Best Lawyers, was evident in the diligence phase. She navigated the financial structuring and corporate compliance aspects with clear expertise, which gave our investor group confidence. The final agreements were thorough and professionally drafted. However, the experience was not without its frustrations. While Kimberly is undoubtedly knowledgeable, there were periods where communication lagged significantly. Responses to time-sensitive emails sometimes took several days, and updates on the deal's progress often felt reactive rather than proactive. For a matter involving banking and finance components, which is another of her recognized practice areas, we expected more consistent touchpoints. She is a capable attorney who knows corporate law inside and out, but managing client expectations around availability and communication seems to be an area for improvement. The work product was solid, but the process felt more cumbersome than anticipated given her stature and the firm's reputation.
