Competent appellate work, but communication could improve

I engaged Joseph Meyer of WilmerHale to handle a complex appeal involving a contractual dispute that originated in Nevada but had federal jurisdictional questions. His background from Yale Law and his recognition in Appellate Practice were certainly factors in our selection. Joseph demonstrated a clear, sharp understanding of the procedural intricacies and drafted a compelling brief. His analysis of the precedent was thorough, and he was well-prepared for oral arguments. However, the experience was somewhat mixed. While the substantive legal work was solid, communication between major milestones was less consistent than I had hoped. There were periods where updates were sparse, and responses to non-urgent emails sometimes took several days. For the premium rate associated with a firm of this caliber, I expected a more proactive flow of information. The outcome of our appeal was favorable, which speaks to his legal acumen. Ultimately, Joseph is a capable appellate attorney who knows the law, but the client service aspect felt more transactional than collaborative. He is undoubtedly skilled, but managing client expectations more clearly would elevate the experience.
