I hired John Szalan II at Neubert, Pepe & Monteith to assist with a commercial lease dispute for my small business. My case involved a landlord attempting to enforce what I believed were unreasonable penalties. Mr. Szalan’s background in real estate law was evident; he was able to quickly parse the complex clauses and understood the relevant statutes. His recognition in Real Estate Law by industry publications is well-deserved in that regard. He successfully negotiated a settlement that avoided litigation, which was my primary goal. However, the experience was a mixed bag. While the outcome was satisfactory, the process felt somewhat disjointed. Response times to emails were inconsistent, sometimes taking several days, which added to my stress during negotiations. There were also moments where I felt I had to follow up to get updates on the other party’s counteroffers. For straightforward legal matters, his expertise from Quinnipiac University and his firm's reputation provide a solid foundation. Yet, for clients who prioritize frequent, proactive communication, there is room for improvement. He is clearly knowledgeable, but the client service aspect didn't fully match the legal acumen.
