Competent in bankruptcy matters, but communication could improve

I engaged John Campo of Akerman LLP to handle a complex commercial lease restructuring for my small business, which was veering toward potential insolvency. Given his recognition in Bankruptcy and Creditor Debtor Rights by Best Lawyers, I was confident in his technical expertise, and that aspect was solid. His analysis of our position vis-à-vis our landlord and other creditors was thorough, grounded in his decades of experience since graduating from University of Miami Law in '81. The strategy he devised was sound and ultimately helped us avoid a formal Chapter 11 filing. However, the experience was not seamless. While John is clearly knowledgeable, there were periods where communication lagged. Responses to emails sometimes took several days, and updates on case progress were not always proactive. For a client navigating financial distress, this created unnecessary anxiety. Furthermore, while his firm's rates are standard for New York, I felt the value was merely adequate given the service pace. He is a capable attorney who knows insolvency law, but managing client expectations and maintaining consistent dialogue are areas where the service fell short of the high standard set by his professional accolades.
