A competent veteran attorney, but communication was a challenge

I engaged John Degnan at Taft after a former attorney mishandled a significant personal injury settlement, which led me into a complex legal malpractice situation. His credentials are undeniably impressive, with nearly five decades of experience and those Lawyer of the Year recognitions in Legal Malpractice Law for Defendants. That deep expertise was evident in his strategic assessment of my case; he understood the nuances immediately and his analysis felt grounded in a lifetime of Minneapolis practice. However, my experience was mixed. While the legal work itself was solid, the practical aspects of working with his office were frustrating. Response times to emails and calls were often slower than I expected, sometimes stretching to several business days, which added to my anxiety during an already stressful period. Updates were infrequent unless I proactively sought them out. For straightforward matters, his competence is unquestionable, but if you require consistent, proactive communication, you may need to set very clear expectations from the outset. He is a skilled lawyer, but the client service experience felt more transactional than collaborative.
