Competent on construction contract dispute, but communication was inconsistent

I hired John Lovell to represent my small home renovation company in a dispute over a contract with a general contractor who refused final payment. John’s background in construction law was immediately apparent. He understood the specifics of the Texas lien laws and the project documentation without needing extensive explanation. His recognition in construction litigation seems well-founded based on his grasp of the legal arguments. We ultimately reached a favorable settlement. However, my experience was mixed. While John was knowledgeable, there were periods of several days where I received no response to my emails, which was stressful when deadlines were looming. His explanations of the process were clear when we spoke, but I sometimes felt I had to initiate contact to get updates. For straightforward construction contract matters, he knows his field, but you may need to be proactive in managing the communication flow. He’s a capable attorney fresh out of the University of Houston Law Center, and I believe he will continue to develop his client management skills with more experience.
