A competent and experienced attorney, but communication could improve

I engaged Jaclyn Kugell at Morgan, Brown & Joy to advise my small business on a complex employee termination that risked a wrongful dismissal claim. With her 33 years of experience and recognition in Employment Law - Management, I was confident in her legal strategy. Her deep knowledge of Massachusetts labor law was evident, and she successfully navigated the separation to avoid litigation, which was our primary goal. However, the experience was not without its frustrations. While her final work product was solid, there were often significant delays in receiving responses to emails, sometimes stretching to several business days, which created anxiety during a time-sensitive matter. Her billing, while commensurate with a lawyer of her stature in Boston, felt rigid, with charges for brief check-in calls that I felt should have been part of the broader retainer. She is undoubtedly a skilled attorney, as her 'Lawyer of the Year' recognition suggests, and I would not hesitate to recommend her for her legal acumen. Yet, for clients who prioritize consistent, proactive communication and a more flexible client service approach, expectations may need to be managed. The legal outcome was satisfactory, but the process felt more transactional than collaborative.
