Competent handling of a municipal zoning dispute

I hired Ian Mathany to represent me in a complex zoning variance dispute with the City of Jacksonville. My case involved a proposed addition to my commercial property that was initially denied by the municipal board. Ian's background, including his recognition in Municipal Law, was a primary reason for my selection. He demonstrated a solid understanding of the local bylaws and administrative procedures. His analysis of the city's position was thorough, and the documentation he prepared for the appeal was clearly well-researched. Ultimately, we achieved a satisfactory compromise that allowed the project to move forward with some modifications. However, the experience was not without its frustrations. Communication was sometimes slower than I would have liked; there were periods of several days where I received no updates unless I initiated contact. While his legal work was fundamentally sound, the process felt somewhat transactional. For a straightforward municipal matter, his four years of experience and education from Queen's University served him well, but I would have appreciated a more proactive and communicative partnership. He is a capable attorney who got the job done, but manage your expectations regarding client service.
