Competent on the legal work, but communication was inconsistent

I engaged Daniel Kim at Ropes & Gray to assist with a complex software licensing dispute that had potential patent infringement implications. On the substantive legal work, Daniel was clearly knowledgeable. His background from NYU and the firm's recognized strength in intellectual property and patent litigation were evident in the research and initial strategy he developed. He understood the technical nuances of our case. However, the experience was mixed on the client management side. There were several instances where responses to time-sensitive emails took longer than promised, leaving our internal team in a holding pattern. While he was always prepared for our scheduled meetings, the day-to-day proactive updates were lacking, making it difficult to feel fully in the loop. For a straightforward matter, his legal acumen would be more than sufficient, but for a matter requiring tight coordination and frequent client touchpoints, the service felt just adequate. He is undoubtedly a sharp attorney with a promising future, especially given his early recognition in appellate and IP practices, but the overall client experience didn't fully match the high caliber of the firm's reputation or his evident technical expertise.
