Competent real estate lawyer, but communication could improve

I engaged Gordon Van Vliet at Miller Thomson to assist with the acquisition of a multi-unit residential property in Calgary. His reputation, including the recent Lawyer of the Year recognition in Real Estate Law, was a primary factor in our selection. On the technical aspects, Gord’s experience was evident. He navigated the due diligence process thoroughly, identified several title issues we had missed, and his background in commercial leasing was invaluable when reviewing the existing tenant agreements. The transaction closed successfully. However, the experience felt somewhat transactional. While his advice was sound, there were periods where communication lagged, requiring follow-up on our part to get updates. For straightforward matters, his expertise is certainly adequate, and his knowledge of Alberta’s real estate and corporate law frameworks is solid. My expectations for a more proactive partnership, given his nearly two decades of experience and partner status, were not fully met. He is a capable lawyer who delivered on the core legal work, but the client service aspect felt just satisfactory.
