Competent on regulatory matters, communication could improve

I engaged Elliott Milhollin at Hobbs, Straus, Dean & Walker to assist with a complex regulatory compliance issue for a small business venture with tribal connections. His 26 years of experience and recognition in areas like Administrative Law and Native American Law were immediately apparent. He provided a thorough analysis of the relevant statutes and his guidance on navigating the federal and tribal regulatory overlap was sound and ultimately effective. However, the experience felt somewhat transactional. While his legal advice was correct, there were periods of several days where I received no updates on the file's status, requiring me to follow up. His explanations, though accurate, could be dense and lacked the plain-language summaries I needed as a client to feel fully informed. For straightforward, high-stakes regulatory work, his expertise from Washington, D.C. is undeniable. Just be prepared to manage your own expectations regarding communication cadence and to ask for clarifications in layman's terms.
