Bio

Ellen L. Maxwell-Hoffman is a partner in the Charleston office of Bowles Rice. She concentrates her practice in the areas of general corporate and commercial law, including acquisitions and finance, corporate governance, compliance programs and training, business ethics and economic development. She frequently provides legal counsel regarding the West Virginia Governmental Ethics Act, federal and state election law, in particular as to the administration and operation of political action committees, and the professional rules of ethics governing lawyers in West Virginia. Ms. Maxwell-Hoffman received a bachelor of science in 1977, a master of science in 1978 and her law degree in 1985 each from West Virginia University. She is admitted to practice in the State of West Virginia and before the United States District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of West Virginia and the Eastern District of Michigan, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and the Supreme Court of the United States. She was recognized by the 2016 edition of Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business among “Leaders in their Field” for Corporate/Commercial Law. She is recognized by Best Lawyers in America in the area of Ethics and Professional Responsibility Law. Ms. Maxwell-Hoffman is a member of the West Virginia State Bar and the American Bar Association through which she is a member of the ABA Section on Professional Responsibility, the ABA Section of Business Law and the ABA Section of Real Property, Probate and Trust Law. She is a member of the Fourth Circuit Judicial Conference and the Judge John A. Field, Jr. American Inn of Court, and is the firm representative for the Polymer Alliance Zone. She serves on the Board of Directors for the Jackson County, West Virginia, Chamber of Commerce.
