I engaged Douglas Carlson to assist with the complex estate and tax planning for my family's business succession. With his 50 years of experience and recognition in trusts, estates, and tax law, I was confident in his technical ability. His analysis of the transactional aspects, drawing from his deep background at Hahn Loeser & Parks, was thorough. He correctly identified key issues related to the acquisition structure we were considering for the next generation. However, the experience was somewhat mixed. While his expertise was evident, communication was not always timely. There were periods where I had to follow up multiple times for updates, and explanations, though accurate, could sometimes feel rushed, as if he was moving on to the next client matter. For straightforward, highly complex tax and estate work, his knowledge from Case Western Reserve and decades of practice is undeniable. Yet, for clients who prioritize consistent, proactive communication and detailed walkthroughs of every step, expectations may need to be managed. He resolved our core legal issue adequately, but the process lacked the seamless client service I anticipated.
