Competent on venture capital matters, but communication could improve

I engaged David Mannheim at Nelson Mullins to assist with the formation and initial funding round for my tech startup in Charlotte. His background in venture capital law was evident; he was knowledgeable about the specific regulatory nuances for North Carolina entities and the structuring of our seed financing. His recognition in this practice area is well-founded, as he capably drafted the necessary subscription agreements and handled the due diligence process. The work product was solid and met the professional standard I expected from a firm of this caliber. However, my experience was a mixed bag. While David was clearly competent on the substantive legal issues, there were noticeable delays in email responses, sometimes taking several business days for a reply on time-sensitive matters. This created some anxiety during a fast-moving negotiation. Furthermore, while he explained the legal concepts, I sometimes felt I had to proactively seek updates on the process rather than receiving regular, proactive check-ins. For straightforward venture capital documentation, David is a capable attorney who knows his field, but managing client expectations and maintaining consistent communication channels are areas where there's clear room for growth as he builds his practice beyond his first year.
