Competent on IP matters, but communication could improve

I engaged Christopher Roberts at Woodard, Emhardt for assistance with a trademark application and potential infringement issue for my small tech startup in Indianapolis. His background in biology from Marian College and his recognition in Intellectual Property Law were initially reassuring, as my product sits at the intersection of software and medical devices. He clearly understood the technical nuances, and his analysis of the prior art search was thorough. The legal strategy he proposed for navigating the USPTO filing was sound and demonstrated the expertise he's developed since his graduation from IU Maurer. However, the experience was somewhat mixed. While the substantive work was competent, there were noticeable delays in email responses, sometimes stretching to several business days, which added to my anxiety during the process. Explanations, while accurate, occasionally leaned too heavily on legal jargon without clear translation for a first-time client like myself. For straightforward IP matters, he gets the job done, but you may need to proactively manage communications and set clear expectations on timelines. The firm's reputation is solid, and Roberts knows his field, but the client service aspect felt just adequate.
