Competent and knowledgeable, but communication could improve

I hired Stuart Mauney from Gallivan, White & Boyd to handle a professional liability matter for my small accounting firm in Columbia. There is no question about his deep expertise in defending professionals; his recognition in the field is well-earned. He clearly understood the nuances of the case from our first meeting and his 18 years of experience, particularly in malpractice defense, were evident in his strategic approach. The outcome was ultimately satisfactory. However, the experience was not without its frustrations. At times, there were significant delays in receiving responses to emails or updates, which added to my stress. While his legal work was solid, managing client expectations and maintaining consistent communication seemed to be a secondary priority. For straightforward matters where you need a capable defender, he is a good choice. Just be prepared to be proactive in following up if you need timely information. His mediation background was a plus in facilitating a reasonable settlement, but the process felt more transactional than collaborative.
