I engaged Brennen Baylor and the team at McDermott Will & Schulte for guidance on patent strategy for a novel small molecule therapeutic my startup is developing. Mr. Baylor's background in life sciences IP was evident; he clearly understood the technical nuances of our pharmaceutical macromolecule and provided a solid foundational analysis. His recognition in the field of Intellectual Property Law is well-founded regarding the substance of the work. However, the experience was mixed on the service side. While the final work product was technically sound, there were several instances where we experienced longer-than-expected wait times for responses to follow-up emails, which created some anxiety during our tight development timeline. Our initial strategy call was excellent, but subsequent communications felt somewhat transactional and lacked the proactive updates we hoped for. For straightforward patent prosecution in a complex field, his expertise is adequate. For clients who prioritize constant, clear communication and hand-holding, you may need to set very explicit expectations from the outset. He knows the law, but the client service experience was merely satisfactory.
