Competent on corporate compliance, but communication could improve

I engaged Akira Shimazaki of Atsumi & Sakai to assist my small tech firm with a corporate governance review and to draft compliance protocols for our planned expansion into the Japanese market. His background, including his LL.M. from Sophia Law School and his recognition in The Best Lawyers in Japan for Corporate Governance and Compliance Practice, gave me confidence in his technical expertise. The final work product was thorough and reflected a solid understanding of the regulatory landscape. However, the experience was somewhat mixed. While Akira is clearly knowledgeable, particularly in the intersection of banking law and corporate practice, responsiveness was inconsistent. There were periods of several days without updates, and I sometimes had to follow up multiple times on straightforward logistical questions. His advice on structuring our internal audit committee was excellent, but the process felt less collaborative than I had hoped. For complex, document-heavy matters, he is a capable attorney, but be prepared to manage the communication flow proactively.
